Waste and recycling

Our War on Waste
Learn about Sutherland Shire Council's waste reduction initiatives - How we're helping residents to reduce waste going to landfill and improving recycling.
Residential bins
Most residents have three bins garbage (red bin), a recycling (yellow bin) and garden waste (green bin). Check your bin day, report a missed collection or apply for an extra bin.
When is my bin collected?
Find your bin collection day and download your waste calendar.
Book a Council clean-up
Residents are entitled to two pre-booked Council clean-ups each financial year. Clean-ups must be booked by an eligible resident (for a house, unit, villa, duplex or townhouse) or by strata or body corporate for large complexes.
Waste wise workshops
We offer residents of Sutherland Shire a range of free waste wise workshops to help you with better recycling and waste avoidance.
Reusable sanitary product and nappy rebate
Residents can claim a rebate up to the value of $50 for the purchase of sanitary products and/or reusable nappies.
Compost Revolution
We offer residents resources and access to tools to reduce waste like half-price worm farms, compost bins and bokashi bins - join the Compost Revolution!
Where does my waste go?
We are responsible for collecting and managing waste services in Sutherland Shire. Find out more about how and where we process your waste.
Electronic waste (E-waste) collections
Electronic waste is hazardous - we host free electronic waste collections for our residents to safely dispose of problem items.
Household Chemical CleanOut
Chemical waste can pose a serious risk to you and the wider community - find out about our free collections for residents to safely dispose of problem waste.
Recycling and disposal directory
An A to Z guide on recycling common materials responsibly.
RecycleSmart app and service
Book a convenient home collection of commonly recycled material with RecycleSmart. This is an on-demand pick up service for clothing, soft plastics and household batteries.
Garage Sale Trail
Council is a proud supporter of Garage Sale Trail, the yearly community-led initiative aiming to reduce waste going to landfill.
Green waste vouchers Wards D and E
Residents of D Ward and E Ward are entitled to two vouchers each financial year to clear excess green waste.
Council waste fleet
Council operate a large fleet of heavy plant and vehicles. From time to time, incidents and accidents may occur.
Summer woodchipping service
We offer a domestic woodchipping service for residents during the daylight saving months each year.
