Public health and safety

Safety in our community
We are committed to supporting the physical, emotional, and social well-being of everyone in Sutherland Shire community. Find out more about our safety programs.
Alcohol in public places
There are restrictions on taking alcohol into or consuming alcohol in some public places. This is intended to prevent anti-social behaviour and improve public safety.
E-Bikes and E-Scooters
Which light electric vehicles are legal, where they can be used, what laws apply and important safety advice.
Graffiti removal
Find out what to do if there is graffiti and or vandalism on your property or public or commercial land, including how to request a graffiti removal kit.
Report illegal dumping
Dumping household items, rubbish, green waste, building and commercial waste and other material is illegal and subject to on-the-spot fines.
Barking dogs
Barking is a natural behaviour. Dogs may bark for many reasons but excessive barking can have a negative impact on neighbours and other animals.
Report a nuisance cat
If you have a complaint about a problem cat, first try talking to the owner. If you aren’t comfortable doing this or can’t agree on a solution, you can report a nuisance cat to us.
Report a dog attack
A dog attack is defined as a dog rushing at, attacking, biting, harassing or chasing any person or animal. Dog attacks do not have to result in an injury to a person or animal to be classed as an attack.
Report unleashed dogs
Dogs must always be on leash and under effective control in public spaces, including at parks and sports fields. Sutherland Shire also contains a number of dog-friendly off leash areas.
Dangerous or menacing dogs and restricted breeds
Council has the authority to declare dogs to be dangerous, menacing or a restricted breed. Strict rules apply.
