This week is National Volunteer Week and I’d like to acknowledge and thank the many volunteers we have in our fantastic community. Almost 20% of residents volunteer and we have a greater proportion of volunteers than that of Greater Sydney. We’ve also seen a number of community groups and organisations adapt to the continually evolving environment in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
One new joint initiative developed by Sutherland Food Services and Sutherland Shire Council, supported by our Seniors and Youth Reference Groups, is Meals and Memos. This is a fortnightly newsletter delivered to over 500 vulnerable and frail aged members of our community receiving Meals on Wheels and facing social isolation. It aims to not only connect with readers, but also invites them to contribute content and includes key contacts and support information. If you have ever considered volunteering, there are always opportunities to get involved. Whether it’s assisting with social support programs or care services such as Meals on Wheels who support those living alone, there are a number of groups and organisations that require assistance and support. Everyone has something valuable to offer and volunteering can be a great way to give back - your support can go a long way in our local community. If this sounds like you, visit sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au/Volunteering or check out your local community centre.
