Sutherland Shire is known for its beautiful, natural environment and we know our community value our natural spaces, bushland and our parks. One of the ways Council works to protect our natural environment is through our Native Plant Nursery, which is located on the Boulevard at Gymea, where we grow more than 250 local plant species.
Last year we produced over 100,000 native plants to distribute to residents and community groups, and for various planting projects. Our staff collect seeds and cuttings from local native plants and when the sprouts become seedlings we replant them into tube-style pots, with the help of our many community volunteers. These planted seedlings are called “tube stock”. Tube stock are then used for all sorts of planting and landscaping projects, but are probably best known as the native plants that are given away to Sutherland Shire ratepayers each year, something we have been doing for over 30 years. Last year we gave away more than 8000 plants, so keep an eye out for your vouchers that are included with your Council rates.
You can redeem your voucher for two free tube-stock size native plants. What a great way to support our environment into the future!
