This year marks 70 years of Australian Citizenship Ceremonies and Council has been hosting these ceremonies in Sutherland Shire on behalf of the Federal Government for many years. Last Friday we welcomed 134 new citizens into our community at a ceremony at the Engadine Community Centre. Some of the countries represented included China, Spain, Canada, India and Indonesia. When an application for citizenship is approved by the Department of Home Affairs, the final step in becoming an Australian citizen is taking the Pledge of Commitment. When I preside over these events, I recite the pledge followed by our new citizens. These ceremonies are one of the highlights on my annual calendar. It is an honour and a privilege to accept our new citizens on behalf of our community. We host four ceremonies in Sutherland Shire throughout the year, including a very special event on Australia Day. It always brings a smile to my face seeing the individuals and families receiving their certificates of citizenship on these special occasions and I would like to warmly welcome all of our new citizens.
