Anzac Day is almost upon us – a time when we traditionally come together to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices our countrymen and women have made in times of conflict. This year, in the midst of the COVID-19, pandemic we must understandably find new ways to honour a legacy that now takes on a new relevance, as we each make sacrifices in the face of a common threat. While attending an Anzac Day service or march is a way of life for many in our community, the continuing need to adhere to health regulations and social distancing measures imposed by the Federal Government and NSW health authorities means sadly these long observed traditions will not be part of commemorations this year. However, Sutherland Shire Council is still committed to honouring the many local servicemen and women who have served and continue to serve our nation here and abroad. We invite our community to honor and acknowledge our Australian servicemen and women and the Anzac spirit by joining broadcasts of services by our local RSLs or the Australian National War Memorial to be aired on their respective social media channels at dawn. The War Memorial service will also be available to view on ABC TV. Council will pay our respects with a special commemoration on our social media channels following the minute silence at dawn. Again, the impact of the COVID-19 is challenging our way of life, but it shouldn’t challenge our commitment to pay tribute to those who have served our nation in times of conflict. Lest We Forget.
