Local Housing Strategy 2041
Council’s adopted housing strategy is called the Local Housing Strategy 2041. This strategy sets long-term goals for housing in the Sutherland Shire and supports the NSW Government’s target to create 6,000 new homes by 2029.
The strategy focuses on building homes in areas that already have good roads, schools, and services. These homes will include:
- Dual occupancy and secondary dwellings (like granny flats)
- Villas and townhouses
- Low-rise and high-rise apartments in and around town centres
This plan was shaped by community feedback. People said they want housing that meets different needs and keeps the area’s natural beauty.
Our goal is to offer housing choices for all household types, improve affordability, and support a strong, healthy community. We want residents to live in homes that are safe, comfortable, and secure, in neighbourhoods with trees and green spaces.
We will develop Place Plans to put the Local Housing Strategy 2041 into action. These plans are being prepared for centres like Miranda, Sutherland-Kirrawee, and later for Cronulla, Engadine, Caringbah, and other centres in the Shire will follow.
We also encourage you to read about our Affordable Housing Contribution Scheme. This scheme explains how we will collect contributions from certain developments to help fund more affordable rental housing for the community.
