Sutherland Shire Council supports and encourages the display of goods on the footway as a means of creating a vibrant streetscape and opportunities for businesses to activate their shop front.

To apply for permission for a business to use Council's footpaths for shopfront displays, you should complete a Shopfront Display Permit Application with the following information:

  • A plan showing the proposed shopfront display area.
  • A copy of your current public liability insurance certificate for a minimum cover of $10 million.

Eligible businesses must pay a fee to use the footpath adjacent to their property. Business owners can pay this fee yearly, quarterly or monthly. These fees are based on the size of your approved area and where your business is located. Visit Council's Fees and Charges webpage for square metre costs.

All businesses are required to pay a refundable security deposit equal to three months of rent and a $325 application fee. You will receive an invoice when your application is processed.

Permit conditions

Businesses have permission to use the area within the approved hours of operation of the business.

Approvals are issued for up to a 12-month period. Renewals are sent at the end of each financial year.
