As across all of NSW, Homelessness in the Sutherland Shire is on the rise with many people sleeping rough or in insecure accommodation. Census figures show that on a state level the number of homeless people in NSW has grown from 23,041 to 37,715 between 2001 and 2016, while locally there were 266 people homeless in the Sutherland Council on census night.

To mark Homelessness Week (August 4 – August 10) Sutherland Shire Council and local service providers are raising awareness about this issue and encouraging local government to do more by hosting “The St George and Sutherland Shire Homelessness Awareness Day” on Wednesday August 7th at the Kogarah Storehouse. The event takes place from 11am – 2pm and includes speakers from Homelessness NSW as well as people who have experienced homelessness, and their journey to finding accommodation. The event will also offer a community lunch to those in need and the opportunity to engage with a variety of local services. All welcome to attend.
