Project background

Heathcote Oval is located at the end of Wilson Parade, adjoining the Royal National Park, and the fields are shared by a variety of sporting groups such as Cricket, AFL, Baseball, Football (Soccer), Oztag and other activity groups like model airplanes and dog training.

We’re following the adopted Heathcote Oval Masterplan to upgrade the Baseball and Soccer fields at the southern end of the complex.  It will also share with a 2nd senior Soccer field and two Oztag fields.

Consultation with the community

Council consulted with the local community and sporting clubs throughout 2021 and the Heathcote Oval Masterplan was endorsed by Council in September 2022.  This project responds to our community feedback and the Sports Strategy.   Find out more about the Consultation.

We have completed Stage 1 for the lighting upgrade and the Dog Off-Leash Park.

Stage 2 consists of two projects:

  • Sports Lighting Upgrade (Stage 2) of the Baseball, Soccer, Cricket fields at the southern end of the complex.  This work is now completed.
  • Sports Fields (Stage 2) is the reconfiguration of the Baseball field to provide upgraded playing surfaces and orientation for greater flexibility.  The design layout has had input from the local sporting clubs.

Project scope

Stage 2 - Sports field work includes:

  • New increased power supply
  • New lighting with remote access controls and variable levels for training and competition. The lighting is by LED luminaires for reduced power consumption.
  • Re-orientation of the senior baseball diamond so batters aren’t looking into the sun and a full-size outfield.
  • Improved field drainage
  • Automatic irrigation
  • New fencing, dugouts and scorer station
  • Dedicated spectator areas and tiered seating.

Project schedule

Procurement – May 2025 to September 2025

Site Establishment – October 2025

Expected Practical Completion – October 2026

Turf establishment - October to December 2026

Oval open to the public – December 2026

Impacts during construction

The field will be unavailable for use until July 2026. Games and training will be relocated to other sites in consultation with Council's Sport Services.

This work is being carried out under a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) under Part 5 of the EP&A Act, Part 8, Division 1 in order to ensure protection of environmental values associated with the Royal National Park.

FAQs

Council is working closely with community stakeholders, including schools, to minimise disruption during construction. Where necessary, alternate venues have been arranged for impacted groups, while others will experience minimal disruption and will be able to continue activities onsite at Heathcote. Council is committed to supporting our community throughout this important work.

The design allows for the diamond and pitcher’s mound to be clear of the soccer field.

Yes. The irrigation system in Stage 2 is designed so that it can be extended to the other fields in the future.
