Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this event taking place in Illawong?

Councils Events and Activations Plan 2026 – 2030 Plan sets a clear, future-focused direction for events and activations, shaped by community needs, emerging trends, economic opportunities, and priorities. It ensures that events are inclusive, innovative, and well-planned, delivering lasting benefits both now and into the future.  It is important to facilitate diverse, low-cost, accessible events across the Sutherland Shire. The Sutherland Shire Council has reported instances of illegal fireworks in the Illawong area over the past few years. By hosting this fireworks display, we aim to reduce the occurrence of illegal fireworks leading up to December 31, 2025.

What measures is the council implementing to ensure the safety of these fireworks?
Council is working closely with Fire & Rescue NSW, the Rural Fire Service, and local police to ensure the safe delivery of fireworks displays. Residents near the sites have been notified about expected noise and provided with safety guidelines. An experienced pyrotechnician has conducted a comprehensive risk assessment in line with SafeWork NSW requirements, considering location suitability, environmental impacts, transport and storage, and minimum safety distances, with sites near bushland excluded. Before any display proceeds, the pyrotechnic contractor must submit a Safe Work Method Statement, licences, and approvals to SafeWork NSW. The event can only go ahead once SafeWork NSW issues a formal Notification of Pyrotechnic Display.

What happens if there is a total fire ban?
If a Total Fire Ban is declared on the day, the event can only proceed if an exemption has been granted by the NSW RFS Commissioner. Council will keep the community updated via social media should this occur.

Council staff may take photos and or videos at this event. We might use those images in our publications, on website or social media or other communications. Please tell a staff member on the day if you don't want your image used.
