MEDIA RELEASE - Sutherland Shire set to roll as more than 600 locals gear up for ‘Bike to the Beach’

More than 600 riders have already signed up to take part in this year’s ‘Bike to the Beach’ event, with Sutherland Shire Council gearing up to deliver another action-packed morning of family cycling and fun set to delight riders of all ages.

Taking place on Sunday 25 May, the much-loved community ride will see participants take to their bikes for a fun and scenic 7km journey from Taren Point Shorebird Reserve to Don Lucas Reserve in Cronulla.

The event continues to grow in popularity each year, offering a safe and supported ride along some of the Shire’s most picturesque cycleways, followed by a vibrant lineup of family-friendly festivities at the finish line.

Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Jack Boyd, said the strong early registrations indicate another successful event, bringing locals together to enjoy the best of outdoor living in Sutherland Shire.

“We’re thrilled to see such a fantastic response from the community once again. This event has become a real favourite on our annual calendar – it’s a wonderful day out for families and a great way to get active while exploring our beautiful, shared paths,” Mayor Boyd said.

“With 630 people already signed up, it’s clear that Bike to the Beach is pedalling ahead as one of the most anticipated events of the year.

The cycling course opens at 9:00am and remains open until 11:00am, with participants booked into designated timeslots for a smooth and staggered start. The supervised course features volunteers at key crossing points and is suitable for riders of all skill levels – from kids and beginners to seasoned cyclists.

The fun doesn’t stop at the finish line. Don Lucas Reserve will be buzzing with excitement until 1:00pm, featuring an inflatable obstacle course, giant slides, face painting, live reptile displays, giveaways, and delicious food and drink stalls.

“This event is more than just a bike ride – it’s a celebration of safe cycling on our shared bike paths, healthy family living, and community spirit,” Mayor Boyd said.

“I encourage everyone who loves being outdoors or simply wants to enjoy a great day with family and friends to come along and be part of the fun. I look forward to seeing everyone there.”

Participants must bring their own roadworthy bikes, complete with a working bell, and are required to wear a helmet to comply with NSW cycling laws. Safety checks of bikes and helmets – funded by the NSW EPA – will be conducted at the start of the course.

Riders will need to present their registration details at the starting point, located at Taren Point Shorebird Reserve, with access via the corner of Smith Street and Alexander Avenue. Limited on-street parking is available nearby.

E-scooters and illegally modified e-bikes are not permitted, and Council encourages the use of non-powered pedal bikes for the ride to ensure a safe experience for all.

Council’s website and Facebook page will be updated with the latest event information including cancellation in the event of wet weather. To register or find out more about the 2025 Bike to the Beach event, visit Bike to the Beach.
