MEDIA RELEASE - New on-the-job training program helping to kickstart careers with Council
Sutherland Shire Council is rolling out a host of new employment and training opportunities, as part of the NSW Government’s ‘Fresh Start’ on-the-job training program.
Council has already welcomed twelve new trainees and cadets to its workforce as part of the program, with each of the new starters already playing a part to deliver vital services to the community.
Among those already brought on board under the program include staff working in early childhood education, IT, human resources, accounting and sports and leisure.
Council is set to recruit a further eight positions under the second round of the program, delivering hands-on vocational training for those seeking to establish careers in a variety of trades, cyber security, early childhood education, recycling and waste and greenkeeping.
Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Jack Boyd said through accessing funding available under the $252.2 million state government initiative, Council had been able to bolster its workforce and provide valuable career development opportunities to a host of talented applicants.
“Council has been lucky enough to welcome a host of new apprentices, trainees and cadets to our organisation under the state government’s ‘Fresh Start’ program, each of whom brings incredible skill and enthusiasm to our organisation,” Mayor Boyd said.
“This program allows Council to provide valuable on-the-job training to those completing their academic qualifications, giving them a head-start on their career.
“We hope for those participating in this program they will also gain a real insight into the huge range of roles that exist at Council, and the incredible rewarding and diverse job opportunities a career at Council can provide.”
Among those who have been recruited to Council through the first stage of the program is Sutherland Shire Council Sports & Leisure cadet Joel Brown, who said he had found the ability to continue tertiary study while gaining on-the-job experience invaluable.
“I am studying but also having work experience in an area I am really passionate about,” Mr Brown said.
“At the end of my two-year cadetship, hopefully I might get the chance to stay on, or I will look elsewhere – either way, I will have a lot of experience which will be really great.”
