MEDIA RELEASE - Community invited to celebrate NAIDOC Week at Cronulla Festival
Sutherland Shire Council, in proud partnership with Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation, invites the community to come together and celebrate NAIDOC Week 2025 at a vibrant free community festival on Thursday 10 July from 10am to 2pm at Gunnamatta Park, Cronulla.
NAIDOC Week honours the rich history, culture and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” celebrates not only the resilience and leadership of Elders past and present but acts as a powerful reminder that together, we walk forward honouring where we’ve come from.
The community event will feature live music, traditional and contemporary cultural workshops, youth and children’s activities, market stalls, sausage sizzle, coffee van, and much more. The whole community is invited to enjoy performances, explore traditional art, and take part in engaging activities such as face painting, games, an inflatable obstacle course and displays from local emergency services.
Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Jack Boyd, said the event is one of several meaningful celebrations held each year that demonstrate Council’s commitment to reconciliation and the celebration of First Nations culture, history, and heritage.
“Council is proud to walk alongside Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation to host this special celebration,” Mayor Boyd said.
“NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect, learn, and honour the strength, vision, and legacy of our First Nations communities. I encourage everyone to come along and take part in what promises to be a fun and meaningful day.”
NAIDOC Week 2025 continues Council’s long-standing partnership with Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation and reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and supporting cultural connection in our local community.
Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation Founder and Chair, Aunt Deanna Schreiber, said, “As a community Elder, I feel it is really important to empower our young leaders. That way, we are continually passing on the legacy of our ancestors to future generations.”
