MEDIA RELEASE - Celebrating 3,000 Years of Wisdom: Centenarians Morning Tea
In a heartwarming tribute to longevity and resilience, Sutherland Shire Council is set to host its largest-ever Centenarians Morning Tea, celebrating the lives of 30 remarkable individuals aged 100 years and over.
This year's event, to be held at Hazelhurst Arts Centre, promises to be a record-breaking gathering – with attendance set to almost triple that of last year. Council extended invitation to 94 centenarians known to be living across the community, though the actual number is likely to be even greater.
Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Jack Boyd, said he was honoured to be attending the event for the first time as Mayor and looked forward to celebrating the lives and stories of the community’s wisest and most senior residents.
“It’s an absolute privilege to be part of such a meaningful celebration — one that recognises not just incredible longevity, but also the resilience, wisdom, contributions and deep sense of community that these individuals bring to Sutherland Shire,” Mayor Boyd said.
In a rare Centenarian celebration and touching family tribute, this year’s event will be particularly memorable, marking the first time two sets of Sutherland Shire centenarian siblings will be celebrated.
Dr Ron Bonamy, 103, and his sister Sylvia Fenton, 100, will join Hazel Favell, who is only weeks away from turning 109. Hazel’s sister Millicent Oliver, 104, also remains in Sutherland Shire.
“These family connections stretching across more than a century are a true testament to the power of family, community connection, and shared history,” Mayor Boyd added.
“Our centenarians are a living link to the past, and it’s incredibly important that we take time to hear their stories and honour their lifetime contributions to our community.”
Hazel Favell is a regular attendee at Council’s annual Centenarian’s Morning Tea and expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to attend such an event.
“It is so nice that the local council celebrates and shows appreciation for the lives of its oldest citizens.”
Returning Centenarian Dr Ron Bonamy also spoke of his fondness for the event.
“Thank you to the Council for again providing the opportunity for older people to gather together in pleasant surroundings.”
The Centenarians Morning Tea remains one of the most cherished events on Council’s Seniors Festival calendar, offering a joyful and dignified opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable role older residents have played in shaping Sutherland Shire.
Hosted by Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Jack Boyd, Centenarians, their family or carer will enjoy a morning tea and an entertaining musical performance.
