We're set to deliver improved pedestrian access, expanded outdoor dining areas and greener spaces with the addition of street parklets in Flora Street under our trial ‘Dine and Revitalise’ project.

Flora Street, Sutherland NSW 2232

Project timeline

Project start: August 2022.

Expected completion: December 2022.

Dine and Revitalise project background

This trial project has been made possible through the enthusiastic support of surrounding business stakeholders and through a successful grant application to the NSW Government’s ‘Streets as Shared Spaces’ program.

The aim of the trial program is to create a vibrant and active space with wider footpaths, parklets and opportunities for expanded outdoor dining as well as safer pedestrian crossings, testing community appetite for a public space to be reimagined in the heart of Sutherland town centre.

You will notice some changes to the streetscape while this trial project is underway, with Council working to ensure minimal disruption while these changes are introduced. Among the changes you will notice is the relocation of the Flora Street bus stop and taxi rank, with Council already working closely with Transport for NSW and taxi operators to ensure these changes do not cause unnecessary inconvenience to regular users of these services.

These changes will be introduced as a trial initially, with the opportunity to change the scale and scope of the project or to revert to the original streetscape design to be determined by feedback from local business operators, residents and other key stakeholder groups.

Council wishes to acknowledge the enthusiastic support provided to the project so far from the surrounding community, and we look forward to keeping all relevant stakeholders informed and engaged in this trial as the project progresses.

Scope of works

Under the trial three bays will be installed, each of 20m in length, with adjoining parklets along the kerb on both sides of Flora Street. A new raised pedestrian crossing adjacent to the Eton Street and Flora Street intersection will be constructed. Parking lanes will also be installed.

Project Schedule
Relocation of bus and taxi rank – September 2022
Installation of parklets – October 2022
Expected completion of works – Early December 2022

Public impacts during construction

During the trial the Flora Street taxi rank will be relocated nearer to Sutherland train station on the Old Princes Highway.

The trial will also see the relocation of bus stop 2232126, 110m from its present site to the northern frontage of Sutherland Public School. Work to enable this relocation is already well underway, with Transport for NSW having already installed a new bus stop on this site.

This trial will cause some minor inconvenience to motorists, with a reduction of five parking spaces on Flora Street and two parking spaces on the Old Princes Highway. Some construction noise is also expected, mainly during nightworks, to install the parklets and construct the raised pedestrian crossing adjacent to the Eton Street and Flora Street intersection.

Work hours

  • Monday to Friday 7am to 5.30pm
  • Occasional Saturday work between 8am and 4pm.
  • No work will take place on public holidays.
