There are plenty of opportunities for bike enthusiasts to enjoy the great outdoors in the Sutherland Shire with a range of free facilities to suit cyclists of all ages and abilities.
Working in close consultation with our local community, Sutherland Shire Council has progressively introduced three bike tracks specially designed to cater for BMX and mountain bike riders.
We invite all local riders and visitors to the region to find out more about these impressive facilities and have their say in the future provision of community cycling facilities through continued consultation on the design of our Mill Creek Mountain Bike Trail.
Barden Ridge Pump Track
The Barden Ridge Pump Track is the second biggest bicycle pump track in Australia, with 954 square metres of curves, dips and transitions for riders of all skill levels and ages to enjoy.
The track forms part of the Ridge Sports Complex, which is a large, fully fenced facility with accessible toilet facilities, shaded rest areas for riders, dedicated car parking spaces and landscaped surrounds.
Waratah Park Mountain Bike Short Track
Waratah Park short track mountain bike park, at the Waratah Park Cycling Track in Sutherland, was built by Sutherland Shire Cycling Club and is maintained by volunteers and donations from the club. It is the home of Australian and State cross country short course mountain bike champions. In 2019 it hosted more national level mountain bike races than any other venue in Australia.
The track sits behind the SSCC clubhouse at Waratah Park cycling criterium track and is open to the public year round when not being used for racing, training or maintenance.
SSCC holds monthly racing that caters for all ages and abilities, male and female in a fun, family-oriented atmosphere.
The track is one way with a combination of tight and twisty corners, jumps, rock gardens and berms, with multiple lines that weave around the small parcel of land to form nearly a kilometre of trail. It’s a perfect spot for those new to the sport, young or old, to forge skills before they venture out onto some of the other wonderful trails the Shire has to offer.
Mill Creek Mountain Bike Trail
The Mill Creek Mountain Bike Trail at Lucas Heights is a work-in-progress under construction by a team of volunteers. Working bees are held on the first Saturday of each month. A map of the track route can be viewed here.
Other opportunities for bike riding are available in the Sutherland Shire in national parks and on fire trails.

Sutherland Shire Council is highly focused on meeting the needs of local bike enthusiasts through the provision of safe, specially-designed facilities. We strongly discourage the construction of unauthorised bike jumps by members of the community, as these jumps can have a detrimental affect on our native bushland and cause a risk to public safety. To see why we don't permit unauthorised bike jump construction in our parks and reserves, click here.
