What is Happening ?

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and Sutherland Shire Council are collaborating to improve public transport reliability and access in the event of emergencies between Menai and Barden Ridge. Works will commence on the bridge between Carter Road and Australia Road, Menai to install a ‘Bus Only’ lane and enforcement camera and remove the existing gate.

The works are scheduled to begin on 14 December 2020 and be finalised by 20 January 2021, with some works taking place at night so to not disrupt public transport services. A concept plan of the works are provided below.

The changes will:

  • maintain bus access across the bridge without relying on the aging gate infrastructure, which requires replacement to maintain reliable service.
  • allow emergency-services vehicles to use the bridge in the event of an emergency.
  • maintain access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Drivers of unauthorised vehicles will be subject to fines and demerit points.  Council will not benefit from the fines.  TfNSW will be requested to waive the fines during an ordered emergency evacuation.

Why is it Happening ?

In late 2019, Council engaged with the local community through the Greater Menai Traffic Working Party, which included representatives of local residents, businesses and Councillors, to discuss local traffic issues. The Working Party membership was created based on those who responded to Council’s request for expressions of interest, as per the link below:

One item considered by the Working Party was concerns some members of the Menai and Barden Ridge community held regarding the bridge connecting Carter Road and Australia Road. The existing bus gate has been plagued by intermittent reliability in recent times. Options to improve the bus gate were considered by Council and replacing the gate with a ‘Bus Only’ lane and enforcement camera was recommended.  The Sutherland Traffic and Traffic Safety Committee endorsed the recommended changes, with Council approval following in March 2020.  TfNSW recently approved the installation of an enforcement camera.
