Trial changes to Council’s Clean Up Service
Council is set to trial some changes to our pre-booked clean up waste collection service, aimed at improving wait times for residents across the Sutherland Shire.
These changes will be introduced from Monday 1 March as part of a 12 month trial to review of our current clean up system.
Among the changes set to be implemented as part of the trial are:
- improvements the online booking system
- introducing more clean up collections on dates falling on public holidays
- limits on household items and green waste placed out for clean up collections to 3m³, (mattress and metals are excluded in the 3m³ limitation)
- requiring residents to neatly place waste materials into separate piles for metals, mattresses, green waste and household items for ease and safety of collection by Council
- excluding hazardous materials from collection
- excluding renovation, construction and business waste
- requiring all green waste to be tied and bundled.
By implementing these changes Council will be able to reduce wait times for bookings and provide a safer environment for our collection staff. Council will be providing more detailed information to residents. As this is a trial Council welcomes your feedback via Cleanuptrial@ssc.nsw.gov.au
Online Waste Wise Workshops 2021
Workshops are for Sutherland Shire residents only.
Balcony and Small Space Productive Gardening
Saturday 6 February 2021, 9.00-11.00am
Have you ever wanted to grow your own vegetables but don’t think you have enough space?
This workshop on small space gardening will help residents make the most of the space they have, whether it’s an apartment with a balcony or townhouse with a courtyard and learn how to reduce the waste you bring home from the supermarket.
Bookings essential: bit.ly/3m8eb4M
Composting and Worm Farming
Thursday 18 February 2021, 6.00-8.00pm
Over 50% of residential garbage can be composted.
Instead of this material contributing to methane gas in the landfill, it can be better reused as a valuable soil conditioner that will replenish nutrients in your garden.
Insects and critters in your compost help to break down the material and often play a vital role in your garden.
Residents who attend this workshop will receive a Compost Revolution voucher for a free compost bin or worm farm.
Bookings essential: bit.ly/35RWBMX
Clean Up Australia Day 2021 registrations officially open
Registrations for Australia’s largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day (Sunday 7th March 2021), are now open at cleanup.org.au.
There has never been a better time to tackle the surge in single-use disposable items, such as takeaway coffee cups, food packaging, masks and sanitised wipes; all of which have increased littering our local parks, bushland, streets, waterways and beaches especially during COVID-19 period.
Sutherland Shire Council supports the local clean-up events by collecting rubbish bags from registered clean-up sites for Sunday 7th March 2021.
In response to COVID-19, additional conditions will be in place to ensure the health and safety of Clean Up volunteers, including a limit to 10 volunteers per clean up group and adherence of social distancing protocols. Additionally, Clean Up kits will be paper-free including QR codes for registration on the day and hand sanitiser, plus bags and gloves for every volunteer.
