Sutherland Shire residents have welcomed a new basketball facility to add to the host of recreational amenities on offer at Parc Menai, as Council looks to extend local leisure opportunities and deliver specialised facilities where keen interest is established.
The construction phase of the project, recently completed ahead of schedule, includes a new outdoor basketball half court, a sandstone retaining wall for spectator seating, new garden beds and tree planting, plus maintenance to lawn areas.
“We received strong endorsement from the community that a new basketball facility would be well received and utilised in this area,” Sutherland Shire Mayor Councillor Steve Simpson said.
“The new additions will complement the existing skate park, playground, barbeque and picnic facilities and large lawn area for community leisure.
“It has been a great collaborative effort to deliver this fantastic new sports facility, and I must thank my fellow Ward Councillors John Riad and Peter Scaysbrook for their advocacy on behalf of local residents, as well as the many Council staff who were instrumental in seeing this project come to fruition.”
The project was developed in consultation with the community over a staged approach to ensure appropriate project outcomes were achieved in delivering facilities that meet the needs of the surrounding community.
“One of the great things about the residents of the Sutherland Shire is their respect for outdoor spaces and how much they value being active,” Mayor Simpson said.
“This site is a much-loved area for the Menai and Bangor community and I know this basketball facility will contribute to the wellbeing and enjoyment of young people who want to get outdoors and have fun.
“Now more than ever our parks, playgrounds and outdoor facilities have proven instrumentally beneficial to our wellbeing, and I’m sure this new facility will be enjoyed for years to come.”
Residents were invited to offer feedback on the project via Council’s ‘Join the Conversation’ platform which highlighted the requirement for this sporting facility.
Council investigated a number of locations for the outdoor basketball court and found the proposed location within Parc Menai posed minimal impact on the environment or on existing playground users, as well as minimal impact on park activations.
