Our Australia Day events kick off this weekend with a huge line up of talent across two days, Sunday 26 and Monday 27 of January. Australia Day will start with a morning Citizenship Ceremony at Sutherland followed by family friendly events at Cronulla Beach and Blaxland Oval Illawong. You can look forward to a non-stop program of live music and entertainment from some of Australia’s best performers including Casey Donovan, Busby Marou and Caravana Sun to name a few. Our Shire Vibes festival on Monday is also not to be missed. Around 35,000 people attend each year, bringing our community together to enjoy entertainment and support worthy causes that benefit from the day’s fundraising. Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation is our local charity partner for 2020 and they have committed to spending all proceeds on purchasing much needed safety equipment for local volunteer firefighters who continue to battle catastrophic blazes across NSW. In light of the fires and taking into account both the concerns of our community and the safety of event attendees, contractors and staff, our fireworks display at Menai District will not go ahead and Council has decided all funds set aside for the display will also be donated to our local Rural Fire Service. Our traditional fireworks display at Cronulla’s Australia Day event, which is launched over water from a barge in Bate Bay, poses minimal bushfire risk so is scheduled to proceed, pending approval from emergency service authorities. These are your events and we have a jam-packed line-up of outstanding family entertainment on offer, so I encourage everyone to come along and be part of the fun, all in the name of raising much needed funds for important causes. I recommend you plan ahead, use public transport where you can to avoid traffic, bring your water bottles to get free refills at our water stations and stay hydrated, and don’t forget our Cronulla and Illawong locations are Alcohol Free zones. See you there!
