Art on Paper: Hazelhurst Art Award 2013

6 Jul 2013 - 25 Aug 2013

New works by 96 artists in a competition of outstanding art created with, on, or about paper.

The judge, Andrew Frost, art critic, writer and broadcaster, declared Lynne Roberts-Goodwin the winner of the $15,000 award at the opening night of the exhibition. Lynne’s winning entry, titled as the sky falls through five fingers #131, was a digital photograph print from the 2012 SWARM series of photographic/installation works. The project involved imagining the avian flight of back ravens in high altitude habitats of central Iran, Mexico, U.S.A and India. The series of high altitude photographic imagery was completed on the Buffavento (defier of winds) Peak of the ‘Five Fingers’ Mountain Range at 1000 metres, in Northern Cyprus.

AOP winner 2013.

The Emerging Artist prize of $5,000, was won by Gregory Hodge with his work titled Magazine Mystics, an acrylic on paper work. The Packers Prize of an artist residency at Hazelhurst was won by Justine Varga with Moving Out, a type C print hand printed from negative.

The Local Artist prize of $5,000 was won by Michelle Cawthorn with her mixed media work titled Bear. The work is part of a larger body that is concerned with the way certain triggers in life provoke memories then couple with our psyche to form new associations.

The winner of the People's Choice Award of $1,000 was Joel Moore aka Mulga with his artwork Raimondo the Rainbow Lion. Runners up included Liz Shreeve, Kasane Low and David Frazer.

Over 750 local, state and national entries were received with 96 artists being selected for the exhibition, including 29 emerging artists and 14 local artists.

The award selection panellists included Jane Cush, Director of Goulburn Regional Gallery, and Liam Benson (winner of the 2011 Hazelhurst  Art  Award).

A diverse range of paper media was presented in the exhibition including pencil drawings, charcoal, ink, oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolour, three dimensional works, photography, printmaking and paper animation.

Due to the tremendous number of received entries artworks were installed in both the regional and community galleries at Hazelhurst.
