In 1977 NASA launched two small probes into deep space. Each carried a golden record, filled with the sights and sounds of Earth. If humanity were wiped out – by nuclear war, an asteroid, or global warming – this would be its only surviving record. I wondered what it would be like to be the last human being alive, returning to a cold and lifeless world. Could a few songs by Beethoven and photographs of once-impressive landmarks ever hope to recapture the human experience? This film is about humanity, our need for one another, and our fragile home planet – a tiny blue dot in this immense universe.
