I Woke and we were Sailing On
Graphite pencil on paper
My work is an allegory depicting a wild hallucination of my subconscious dream world. I take a visual journey from Goya’s The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, through my hair, passing wild horses and the dramatic waves of Hokusai, out into the ghost ship from Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The darkness we see as we first close our eyes begins with the cat, and the following tonal gradient is used to allude to how dreams work. As the subconscious takes control of our sleep, we can be reminded of things that have a deeper meaning for us.
