Minikui: The Seen and the Unseen

Paper, foamcore

Minikui (Japanese): difficult to look at

My work is based on the theme of ‘the seen and the unseen’ and explores changes due to the mining boom in Australia. My conceptual practice developed from the starting point of debris, as my early work revolved around changes in the landscape due to natural disasters. At that stage I did not focus on human impacts, but in the end I came to mining as a focus. By taking photos in a rural landscape and in a dark room I was able to manipulate the images and create the appearance of underground mining. Leading to the concept of Minikui: difficult to look at.
