Charcoal on paper
I wanted to portray the Pittwater region where I live, its beauty and dark history, establishing a simultaneous connection with the land and the tragedies of its native people. My work blends history and place through the use of subjective charcoal markings and the chiaroscuro effect. My cloud formations – reminiscent of the hunting smoke of the Aborigines, evoking imagery of when the colonists first laid eyes on the Australian continent – loom over the landscape, like a constant reminder of its poignant past.
