The Fountain

Acrylic on canvas with oil glaze

In response to increasing concerns about the environment, my surreal painting The Fountain criticises human dominance over the natural world by envisioning an unsettling urban landscape rife with disrepair and decay. In the familiar setting of Hornsby and the Sydney CBD I have represented the iconic Hornsby fountain to make a unique environmental statement concerning our inability to coexist with the natural world. The Fountain presents a panorama of an unnatural world, where evidence of our technical brilliance has deteriorated and the sanctuary of nature has been subordinated. My work includes references to Jan Senbergs’s All the news that’s fit to know and Peter Booth’s Landscape with fly.
