Sutherland Shire Council seeks to encourage and expand the night time economy as part of the Sutherland Shire Economic Strategy . Late night trading is about expanding existing day time businesses into the evening and night time, with an emphasis on arts, music and culture. By creating vibrant places  and  offering more options for things to do after dark, not only benefits the local economy, but the liveability of our suburbs. Some examples of business opportunities and undertakings are:

 

  • Shops open later for workers heading home or for those who don’t work standard hours
  • Businesses who want to expand or diversify their current daytime activity into the late night space
  • Budding entrepreneurs that operate or want to operate into the late night
  • Art galleries, theatres, studios and auditoriums
  • Retail venues such as book stores, boutique clothing who would like to host forms of entertainment.
  • Small bars
  • Cafes and restaurants
  • Pop-up or temporary uses such as events or markets
  • Food trucks or mobile vendors or venues
  • Venues who have the ability to host live music
  • Any business seeking to diversify into the night

  

So what is late night trading?

 

The NSW State Government Night Time Economy Round Table 2016 defines late night trading as any social or business activity that takes place between 6pm and 6am. This includes a myriad of business activities, events and services who improve the attractiveness of a destination as a desirable place to live.

You can also talk directly to a Sutherland Shire Council Duty Officer who can answer general questions about planning and approval requirements.  Duty Officers are available Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4.30pm either by telephone or in person at council's Customer Service Centre  to answer enquiries about the DA process.

# Other useful information:

 

The Sutherland Shire Development Control Plan 2015 - Chapter 37 Late Night Trading contains maps that indicate high, intermediate and low activity areas. The best location for extended trading hours is close the town centre core – high activity areas. As distance from the centre increases, the area is likely to become more residential and restrictions may apply to preserve residential amenity. Licensed premises (hotels, bars, clubs, and licensed restaurants) also have special restrictions to protect local amenity.  Please consult the plan for further information.
