Grading Levels

Nursery

6-15 months - Nursery involves the parent/carer and the child, and is designed for infants to gain water awareness and confidence.

Advanced Nursery

15 months - 3years - With the teacher's assistance the parent/ carer helps the child to become confident in the water and learn about water safety.

Goldfish

The Goldfish level is aimed at gaining a child's independence so they can develop a feel of natural buoyancy and body position without a parent in the water with them. Children from Sutherland Leisure Centre's nursery program are invited to participate in this level.

Frys

Confidence skills, water safety and evidence of water familiarisation are achieved in the group. Children will learn to float, do a torpedo and dog paddle independently.

Eels

These children are comfortable in the water and can float and dogpaddle independently. They will be taught freestyle arms and kick on their back.

Duck

Basic freestyle is taught to these children, who have good coordination of arms and legs. Two-stroke breathing and backstroke arm techniques are introduced and reinforced until children are capable of moving to the next level.

Crayfish

The freestyle stroke is strengthened in this level. Children learn fourstroke breathing and backstroke arm and leg techniques. Children's stamina is increased.

Bluebottles

These children have the strength and stamina to swim backstroke and freestyle using bilateral breathing. Technique and body position are focus points of this group.

Angelfish

These children are capable of swimming 25 metres in both freestyle and backstroke. Endurance work and stroke correction strengthens the swimmer. Upon completion of this level children are qualified to join Sutherland Leisure Centres Squad Program.
