Dog Friendly Areas

There are designated off-leash/on-leash areas for dogs in the Shire. In dog off-leash areas, dogs can be exercised without a restraining device, but must be still under the control of a competent person.

The information contained here about dog off-leash/on-leash times is a guide only. Please ensure you check signage at the location.

When using any off-leash areas:

  • Dogs suffering from a contagious disease, skin irritation or parasitic infection are prohibited from off-leash areas
  • All dogs using this area are to be accompanied and supervised by a competent person
  • All dogs using the area must be controlled by the owner/handler when not leashed
  • Dog owners/handlers must remove all dog faeces and dispose of them appropriate

Dogs are Prohibited in Some Areas

In accordance with the Companion Animals Act 1998, Dogs are prohibited in the following places (whether or not they are leashed or otherwise controlled) unless they are designated as Dog Off-Leash Areas:

  • Within 10 metres of playgrounds and play equipment
  • Within 10 metres of any apparatus provided for the preparation of food for human consumption, except if the place is a public thoroughfare (such as a road, footpath or pathway)
  • In areas set aside for public recreation or the playing of organised games
  • In bathing areas such as tidal pools and beaches
  • Within schools
  • Within child care centres
  • Within shopping arcades or shopping complexes, including parking areas or access to shops
  • Within any area set apart for the protection of wildlife

This does not apply to:

  • Police dogs
  • An assistance animal being used by a person with a disability
  • Corrective services dogs
