Planning for the Ageing Population
In many communities across Australia, including Sutherland Shire, larger numbers of residents are ageing. With adequate forward planning, this increase in the ageing population is something that council and the community can take in their stride. Council has taken a positive view on ageing so that, as a community, we can focus on 'ageing well'.
An Ageing Strategy has been developed by council to recognise what is needed now to prepare for an ageing population to 2030. The goal is to highlight what we need to change, start doing or do differently. The three main areas focus on what council will do, what residents can do as individuals and what other organisations in the community can do.

Aged Housing Survey
In 2007, council conducted a survey of shire residents aged over 64 years about housing choice. The purpose of the survey was to assist in the development of the Ageing Strategy for Sutherland Shire. Council recognises that there are both opportunities and challenges facing aged residents of the Shire. The Aged Housing Survey 2007 provides information on:
- the type of houses
- managing houses
- residents future housing plans
- housing preferences
- housing options
