Illegal Dumping

Each year the council incurs considerable cost for investigation, collection and disposal of illegally dumped matter.

Dob in a dumper

Report:illegal dumping to council online

Our community as a whole needs to work together to reduce dumping and work towards achieving social and environmental benefits. These include improving amenity around multi-unit dwellings and resource recovery of dumped material.

If you see a possible illegal dumping, obtain as much information as possible, such as:

  • location where the incident occurred
  • what was being dumped
  • time of day and date
  • registration plates and description of vehicle
  • description of person
  • any other identifying information.

The council will then commence its investigative process. Any information provided will be held in strictest confidence.

Why is dumping dumb?

Dumping unwanted household items and green waste is illegal and subject to on-the-spot fines of $750 - higher fines if the incident goes to court.  It also:

  • attracts more dumping and as the pile of rubbish grows it becomes a hazard
  • it can block visibility and pathways
  • it's aesthetically unpleasing
  • creates litter and attracts pests

What you can do if you have too much rubbish

Instead of dumping, use the council clean-up days or the recycling directory in your waste management booklet for where to take unwanted items.

If you have too much rubbish for your 120L bin you:

  • should attend one of our courses to find out more about what can be recycled and how to reduce your waste; or
  • alternatively you can apply to pay for an additional service.

Commercial Waste

It is illegal to place commercial waste into bins provided in public places.

If you have waste produced by a business please consider the council's business waste service.

You can Report It online or call the council on (02) 9710 0333 during business hours.
