Clean Up Australia Day 2012

Each year Sutherland Shire Council’s Waste Management Unit supports Clean Up Australia Day through media promotion, by providing equipment (gloves, bags, safety vests, sharps containers) and by providing the community with a rubbish service.

The Clean Up Australia Day Campaign includes a Business Clean Up Day, a Schools Clean Up Day and a Communities Clean Up Day and were held on the 28th of February, 2nd of March and the 4th of March 2012, irrespectively.

This year in the Shire there were a total of 102 registered sites, that included 45 registered school sites and 57 registered community groups collected over 9 tonnes of rubbish from various sites around the Sutherland Shire. The total tonnage of rubbish recorded only included the rubbish collected on the Sunday the 4th of March and this does not include additional rubbish collected after that date. In addition, 87% of the schools who participated disposed of their rubbish in their own skip bins, although Council offered a service collect it. This year, combined the efforts of 9,603 volunteers. As a nation, over half a million people removed over 16,199 tonnes of rubbish from over 7,300 sites around Australia.

Next year Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday 3 March 2013 - but it can't hurt to do your bit every day to keep the Shire beautiful.
