Impounded animals

If your dog or cat is missing there is a chance that your pet has been found roaming by a council officer and has been impounded at the Animal Shelter.

If your animal is impounded

Registered dogs or cats will be housed at the shelter for 14 days. During that time we will make every effort to contact you using the information provided on the animal's registration and microchip.

Unregistered animals will be housed at the Shelter for 7 days.

If the animal's owners have not been located at the end of these periods, the animal will be sold.

This highlights the importance of microchipping and registering your pet. It is also a requirement that dogs and cats wear tags with a name and contact number on their collars. This helps improve the chances of reuniting you with your pet. 

Collecting an impounded animal

When you come to the shelter to collect your impounded pet, you will be required to show identification. If you are picking the animal up on behalf of its owner, then you will need to produce a letter of authority from the owner before the animal can be released.

If the animal is not microchipped or registered, this must be done and paid for before they can be released from the shelter.

Impounding fees

You will be required too pay impounding fees before your animal is released to you.

These fees include both a flat impounding fee, plus a sustenance fee, which is charged for each day that the animal is held by the council. Fees are:
