Conditions of Membership
When should I bring my library card with me?
- You need your library card to borrow from the library.
- You also need your card to renew or extend your loans and to place holds or reservations.
What happens if I lose my library card?
- As all items borrowed on your card are your responsibility, you should notify the library immediately if your card is lost or stolen.
- A $4.00 fee is charged to replace lost or damaged cards (adult members only).
Are there any limits on what I can borrow?
The following restrictions apply:
- new members are limited to three items the first time they borrow
- other borrowers are limited to 30 items
- reference and local studies material cannot be borrowed.
Can I return my items to any Sutherland Shire Library?
- You may return your items to any Sutherland Shire Library regardless of which Library you originally borrowed them from. So, for example, you could borrow an item from Sutherland Library and return it to Cronulla Library.
- You cannot return an item to a Library that isn't part of the Sutherland Shire Libraries network.
Can I renew my items?
- Items may be renewed in person, by telephone or online.
- To renew online, you will need to enter your Library card barcode and PIN number. If you have overdue items or outstanding fines you may not be able to renew your items online. Please contact Library Services. See Login for more details.
- Up to 3 renewals are allowed per item - some restrictions apply.
- If an item has been requested it cannot be renewed.
What happens if my loans are overdue?
- A fine will be incurred for any item on a daily basis after it is four days overdue. For adult items, on the fifth day an item is overdue the charge will be $2.00 an item, plus 60¢ per item per day after that. For junior items, on the fifth day an item is overdue the charge will be $1.10 an item, plus 10¢ per item per day after that.
- A reminder is sent only when the items are 10 days overdue.
- When fines exceed $10 (adult card) or $2.00 (junior card), no further items may be borrowed on that card.
- Legal proceedings will be commenced if the item is not returned and all outstanding fines are not paid.
What happens if I damage a book or other library item?
- If an item is damaged beyond repair, you will be required to pay the replacement cost, plus a $16.00 processing fee ($3.50 for magazines/serials).
- If an AV case/insert or RFID tag is damaged, you will be required to pay a $5.70 processing fee.
- Different conditions apply to items borrowed through our Interlibrary loans system.
What happens if I lose an item?
- You will be required to pay the replacement cost of the item plus a $16.00 processing fee.
- Different conditions apply to items borrowed through our interlibrary loans system.
- Refunds are not provided for items that are later found by borrowers.
Does it cost anything to place a hold or reservation on an item?
- Adult reservations cost $1.00 per item. Reservations can be placed any time using our Library catalogue.
