Greenweb

What is Greenweb?

The Sutherland Shire Council's Greenweb program aims to protect and enhance the Shire's native plant and animal populations by identifying key areas of bushland habitat and establishing corridors to connect them. These corridors make it easier for the movement of both plants and animals, a move that is essential to the maintenance of healthy populations and diversity.

Although Sutherland Shire's Greenweb incorporates both public and private lands, its main target is private property owners within the Shire, particularly those of you within the Greenweb network. This program complements the council's Bushcare program which focuses on bushland regeneration activities on public land in the Shire.

Greenweb's focus is on voluntary participation, with incentives to encourage our residents to participate. Initially, the council's Greenweb officer inspects your property and provide a free garden consultation. This visit may involve identifying appropriate native plant species for the area, appropriate landscaping to encourage native fauna, invasive weed species, and answering any other environmental or horticultural questions that the resident may have.

Regular information regarding the Greenweb program is provided to participating residents together with free native tube plants from the council's nursery and, in some instances, a second green waste bin and/or bush regeneration bags for free weed collection is available.

Is my property in a Greenweb zone?

Upon submitting your address Shire Maps will open, and your property will be highlighted. The map is colour coded to show Greenweb zones (you may need to zoom out and refer to the Legend).

Not working? Ensure the address is correct and flash is installed.

How can I participate?

You can participate by simply adding a few native plants, removing invasive weeds, installing nest boxes or retaining and enhancing natural features in your yard, such as logs or rocks that make great habitats for many types of native animals. To organise an inspection or for more information, contact council's Greenweb Officer on 02 9710 0463.

Financial assistance

The council funds a number of initiatives to support Greenweb. This support has included a program where owners of private property in Sutherland Shire's Greenweb network were able to apply for financial assistance to support ecological restoration work on bushland in their property.  APPLICATIONS FOR THESE GRANTS USUALLY OPEN BETWEEN 1ST AND 31ST AUGUST EACH YEAR.  For more information on these grants visit council's Greenweb Grants webpage or contact council's Greenweb Officer on 9710 0463.

Can schools participate in Greenweb?

Schools also participate in the Greenweb program. They can play a vital role in the creation of wildlife corridors or by enhancing existing bushland in their grounds. Educational talks about Greenweb (bushland and biodiversity) as well as planting days and bush regeneration works are undertaken in schools throughout the Shire.

What do I do next?

Are you or your school within Sutherland Shire's Greenweb network? Would you like to participate? Do you need to manage your bush? Do you want to know more? To organise an inspection or for more information contact council's Greenweb Officer on 02 9710 0463.
