Signs

Do I need approval?

You will not need approval if the proposed sign meets the relevant development standards for exempt development. You can find the relevant standards in the NSW government's State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008.

Check for exempt development in the State Planning Policy

If the proposal doesn't qualify as exempt development, you may be able to apply for a Complying Development Certificate or a Development Application.

Can I apply for a Complying Development Certificate?

Complying Development Certificate may be issued for a projecting wall sign, freestanding pylon sign or directory board sign if the proposal meets the relevant development standards. You can find the relevant standards in the NSW Commercial and Industrial Alterations Code.

If the proposal doesn't qualify as complying development, you will need to lodge a Development Application.

I need a Development Application. What do I do?

Council may grant development consent for signage if the proposal meets the relevant planning controls.

You can view the planning controls for signage in Sutherland Shire Local Environmental Plan 2015 and Sutherland Shire Development Control Plan 2015.

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment has a useful guide to the DA process.
