Depending on the position, work/life balance initiatives include flexitime, job rotation, job share/ part-time and casual work, personal leave and study assistance.

- Council adopts a consultative approach and staff are encouraged to volunteer and participate in the decision making processes which affect them, through Consultative Committee, EEO Advisory Committee, Occupational Health & Safety Committees.
- Sutherland Shire Leisure Centres - corporate membership is available to the council staff through weekly salary sacrifice.
- Sutherland Shire Council Employees Social and Welfare Centre - staff have a social and welfare club approved and subsidised by the council and open to membership for all council employees - benefits include social activities, welfare benefits and sickness benefits.
- Counselling Services - our Employee Assistance Program is for employees and their partners. This is a confidential, short-term counselling service offering free professional help, support and assistance for a wide range of personal and work related problems.
- Transport Incentive Scheme - in order to encourage staff to use public transport to travel to and from work, Council will pay, in advance, the cost of an annual rail pass, thus enabling employees to take advantage of discounted fares. Staff then re-imburse Council, by weekly payroll deduction.
- Commitment to Occupational Health and Safety - Council makes every effort to provide a safe work environment and to rehabilitate injured workers.
