Internal Ombudsman

The Office of the Internal Ombudsman was established in 1999 and has since developed to include responsibility for ensuring a high standard of corporate governance exists at Sutherland Shire Council. The Sutherland Shire Council Office of the Internal Ombudsman has three functions.

  • to impartially investigate complaints about poor administration, maladministration or misconduct by council staff or councillors (in an administrative capacity)
  • to provide guidance and education for staff and councillors about ethical decision-making, proper conduct, council policies
  • an internal audit function to ensure the effectiveness of council's internal controls.

Some of the benefits of the Office include ensuring that customers' complaints are dealt with fairly and impartially, assisting staff in focusing on our customers, policies, guidelines and controls and addressing systemic issues relating to poor administration, internal controls or conduct within the council.
