Each year council's annual community awards program recognises the unsung heroes and organisations who give generously of their time and expertise to help others.
There are many of these people in our community - those who consistently volunteer for charity work, never hesitate to join important community initiatives, strive to improve the community services and facilities of the Shire, and of course, are tomorrow's leaders full of youthful exuberance.
2012 Citizen of the Year
Sutherland Shire Citizen of the Year is awarded to a Shire citizen who has achieved the most distinguished performance and/or made the most outstanding contribution to the Shire community during 2010/11
Congratulations, Mr James Bruce, Sutherland Shire Citizen of the Year for 2012.

Mr Bruce has dedicated many hours and years to the lighting and sound at Arts Theatre Cronulla. His skill and amazing designs have taken audiences from outback Australia to Central London all from the small stage at the Arts Theatre Cronulla.
2012 Young Citizen of the Year
Sutherland Shire Young Citizen of the Year is awarded to a Shire resident aged under 26 as at 26/1/2012 who has made a significant contribution to the community during 2010/11.
Congratulations, Mr Chris Boyd, Sutherland Shire Young Citizen of the Year for 2012.

Mr Boyd overcame his own illness to establish “Australian Youth Against Cancer” (KAYAC): a charity that fundraises and raises awareness for cancer treatment and research in Australia.
2012 Community Group of the Year
Sutherland Shire Community Group of the Year is awarded to an organised community group based in the Sutherland Shire which has made the most outstanding contribution to the local community during 2010/11.
Congratulations, Sutherland Shire Community Transport, Sutherland Shire Community Group of the Year for 2012.

Sutherland Shire Community Transport have built up a fleet of dedicated vehicles, drivers and support volunteers who have transported community members around the Shire for 21 years.
2011 Award Recipients:
Citizen of the Year
Bob Sharkey was named Sutherland Shire Council's 2011 Citizen of the Year in acknowledgment of over a decade of volunteer work and working with Sutherland Shire charities and community groups through the annual clubs grants program.
Young Citizen of the Year
Alexandra Vance, a law and psychology university student won the award for her considerable contribution to youth in the Shire.
Community Group of the Year
The Cronulla Lantern Club was recognised for its dedication in organising events and raising funds to support the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children.
Nominations for Citizen of the Year 2013 will open in October 2012.
