The following is a brief overview of Council’s achievements over the past 12 months and what Council will be working to deliver for the community in 2017/18.

Highlights of Council’s 2016/17 projects:

  • More than $14.5 million was spent on roads, kerb and guttering, footpaths and shared pathways
  • New synthetic surface at Sylvania Waters Athletics Track
  • Upgrades to Waratah Park in Sutherland and new clubhouse amenities at Preston Oval in Engadine
  • New picnic area, BBQ shelter, seating and landscaping at Joseph Banks Native Plants Reserve
  • Dianella Street Early Education Centre now has a custom-designed outdoor play area
  • We celebrated Australia Day with AUSFEST, a free two-day community event across three sites
  • Menai and Engadine Skate Parks received facelifts, with street art murals painted by artists

Looking ahead Council has a comprehensive $45.68 million capital works program for 2017/18, including:

  • $18.6 million to be spent on transport infrastructure
  • $4 million on parks and playgrounds
  • $2 million for stormwater infrastructure
  • $1.6 million on natural areas management
  • $1.3 million for sporting fields
  • $805,000 on leisure centre improvements
  • $625,000 to be spent on renewing and refurbishing early education centres

Across Sutherland Shire this includes projects such as:

  • Upgrades to the Como Shire Gateway
  • Replacing playgrounds at Kiewa Place Reserve in Kirrawee and Narnia Park in Alfords Point
  • New car park, picnic area, boat and kayak facilities at Old Ferry Reserve in Illawong
  • New nets at Gunnamatta Bay Baths and a new boat ramp and wharf at Tonkin Oval
  • Upgrades to Sandy Point Rural Fire Station and Sutherland Shire’s SES facilities
  • Over $1 million to be spent on new resources at Sutherland Shire’s eight Libraries
