The Shire Kids Festival is back and bigger than ever in 2017! Kids of all ages are in for the time of their lives these July school holidays with a huge program of activities hosted by Council’s Leisure Centres, Menai Indoor Sports Centre, Bushcare service, Sutherland Shire Libraries, Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre, Vacation Care and once again Council invites the community to celebrate the NAIDOC event, hosted by Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation and proudly supported by Sutherland Shire Council.
“Council has gone above and beyond this year to deliver the 2017 Shire Kids Festival - a comprehensive school holiday program that is guaranteed to keep kids engaged and learning while having loads of fun,” said Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pesce.
“We’re encouraging families to try the many activities that Council offers for the young and young at heart. So jump onto Council’s website and check out all that’s on offer during the Shire Kids Festival this July and ensure the school holidays are never boring,” said the Mayor.
Once again the community is invited to join the official proceedings and celebrations for NAIDOC 2017 on Thursday July 6. Hosted by the Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation and supported by Sutherland Shire Council, NAIDOC celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The range of free and fun activities on offer include a visit from Symbio Wildlife Park’s hands on animal display, a jumping castle, face painting and other arts and crafts. The Sharks premiership trophy will also be on display for fans to grab a photo before enjoying a sausage sizzle barbecue for a gold coin donation.
Menai Indoor Sports Centre and Sutherland Leisure Centres
The Menai Indoor Sports Centre will be running a daily Multisport Fun Camp offering a selection of sports including basketball, indoor soccer, indoor cricket, dodgeball, football, Frisbee, netball, tee ball, hockey and handball.
Daily Bubble Soccer sessions will also be held between 11am and 3pm for children over 120cm in height. The Multisport Fun Camps and Bubble Soccer will be held Monday to Friday from July 3 until July 14 for children eight to 12 years of age. Enclosed shoes must be worn for all activities.
On Tuesdays between July 4 and July 11, children aged five years and over will also be able to take part in Karate classes hosted by current Fijian and former Australian National Coach, Tony Hails. Bookings are essential, with details available on Council’s website.
Sutherland Leisure Centre will be hosting a Fun and Fitness Holiday Camp which will include a fully supervised range of circuit classes, aquatic activities including rides on giant water inflatable, outdoor games, bush walks and sports skills sessions. Participants are required to wear appropriate clothing and are expected to provide or purchase their own food for the day. Bookings and details are available on Council’s website.
Sutherland Shire Council’s Bushcare team will host a free day of fun at Sir Joseph Banks Native Plant Reserve these school holidays on Wednesday July 5.
Kids are encouraged to form small teams or pairs before they race through the beautiful native gardens to find the clues as part of ‘Scamper Through the Jungle’. Bookings are essential and can be made online at Council’s website by following the Shire Kid’s Festival links. All children are to be supervised by a parent or guardian over 18 years of age when participating in this event.
Council’s Hazelhurst Regional Gallery & Arts Centre will be offering three amazing daily experiences for kids of all ages during the Shire Kids Festival, every weekday between Monday July 3 and Friday July 14.
Kids can enjoy a number of free artist led activities including sculpting, painting, cardmaking and collage building for two hours between 10am and 12pm on weekdays. A free Kids Holiday Film Program showing films such as ‘Moana’, ‘Flickerkids’, ‘Fern Gully’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’ among many others. These will be screened in the Hazelhurst theatrette from 1pm Monday to Friday.
Budding artists aged 14 to 18 years old will have the opportunity to attend two workshops on July 11 and July 12 focusing on either painting or drawing. A six hour painting workshop and three hour drawing workshop, hosted by tutor Nicole Kelly, will respectively allow students to explore a range of painting experiences and approaches, or extend their drawing skills using a ‘still life’ to focus on drawing techniques that have been used successfully by generations of artists.

Sutherland Shire Libraries
All seven of Sutherland Shire Council’s libraries at Sutherland, Miranda, Caringbah, Cronulla, Engadine, Sylvania and Menai will be hosting a huge range of activities throughout the school holiday weekdays between Monday July 3 and Friday July 14. Drawing workshops, storytelling, arts and crafts and plenty of other hands on activities will be on offer.
