If you’d noticed that Don Lucas Reserve is looking considerably larger and greener lately, you’d be right. Work has recently finished on a project to increase the amount of open space at Don Lucas Reserve in Wanda by more than 14,000 square metres.
With the continued development of the Greenhills Parklands, the Bate Bay maintenance and NSW Soil Conservation depots that were previously in the Reserve will be relocated to a purpose-built compound at Greenhills.
“By moving the depots to a more appropriate location we’ve been able to increase the size of Don Lucas Reserve by 30 per cent,” said Sutherland Shire Mayor, Carmelo Pesce.
“This is great news for the community as it makes Don Lucas Reserve one of the most accessible and picturesque areas of public open space in the Shire. It’s arrived just in time for the Relay for Life which is moving to the beachside location in May this year for the first time,” he said.
Access to the popular Heritage Sand Dune has also been made easier with a shared pathway extending from Sanderson Street to the Heritage Dune access track.
“Along the pathway we’ve installed seating and we’ve also made provision for underground power to create the capacity to host a variety of community events in the reserve,” said the Mayor.
To complete the work, the maintenance depot sheds were demolished and 49,000 tonne of clean fill and 5,000 tonne of top soil was brought in to create an expanded park space and linking shared pathways. A total of 14,000 square metres of new turf was also laid to create expansive green space.
The project was undertaken in collaboration with the developer of the neighbouring housing estate. The heavy vehicles were able to enter the site via the future housing estate meaning that the impact on the community was kept to a minimum during the project.
Don Lucas Reserve is located behind Wanda Beach and offers a range of recreation opportunities including a fitness track, covered adventure playground, picnic facilities, half basketball court and exercise equipment and an accessible amenities block.
