Let The Music Play At Youth Week 2017

Published On 31 March 2017 at 12:00 PM

Sutherland Shire Council is once again proud to celebrate National Youth Week in 2017.  This year’s celebrations will include a range of sporting, artistic and cultural events to engage and encourage young people in our area to show off their talents, support their peers and open dialogue about youth issues in our area.

Council’s largest Youth Week event in 2017 is the ‘Beach to the Burbs’ music festival which will be held across two stages in Dunningham Park and Perryman Square, Cronulla on Friday 8 April.  This free, all ages music festival will host a mix of local talents including Tom Stephens and the S-Bends and the Signs of Life feat. The Kirrawee High School Jazz Orchestra.

The music will continue at the 2017 Sutherland Shire Youth Rock competition which will be held from Wednesday 5 April through to the finals on Sunday 9 April at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre.  The competition will be judged by representatives of the music recording industry with more than $10,000 worth of prizes up from grabs between the competition finalists.

Greenhills Skate Park is set to host its biggest skate competition to date on Friday 8 April.  The competition will include a range of age groups from under 9s to open age categories.  Registrations will be held on the day from 10:30am with regular bus services being operated by TransDev to and from the skate park.  For more information regarding available heats on the day visit Council’s website and follow the links for Youth Week 2017.

Clowning Around will be a new addition to Youth Week in 2017.  The magician truly will reveal his secrets at this free event for high school students, which will give them the opportunity to learn simple magic, juggling and circus tricks.  All tricks are safe and often use household items, letting budding magicians hone their skills at home.  Bookings are required and can be done online by visiting Council’s website and following the Youth Week 2017 links.

Once again the Sutherland Police Expo will be held at Cooper Street Reserve, Engadine as part of Police Youth Engagement Day on Wednesday 19 April.  Local emergency services will come together to provide information to young people and their families about the range of services available in the Sutherland Shire area.  A range of police and emergency vehicles will also be on site for children to investigate and explore.  For more information on the Sutherland Police Expo visit the Sutherland LAC Facebook page.
