Although not always visible, Homelessness is a reality in Sutherland Shire. Many walk a fine line between sleeping rough and having accommodation on a daily basis. To mark Homelessness Week (August 6 – August 12) Sutherland Shire Council is getting behind several generous organisations across the area to support community members in need, with Mayor Carmelo Pesce and Councillors attending food services throughout the week.

The first New South Wales (NSW) road built with soft plastics and glass at Engadine in the Sutherland Shire will see plastic from approximately 176,000 plastic bags and packaging and 55,000 glass bottle equivalents diverted from landfill.

As we get older, our chances of experiencing difficulties with our vision or hearing may increase. Council is providing a free seminar covering age-related eye disease and hearing loss on Thursday, 13 September at Gymea Tradies.

Private property owners in the Greenweb network are invited to apply for grants up to $2,000 to restore natural bushland on their property. The grants are available for work such as removal of invasive bushland weeds, regeneration and revegetation of natural bushland with local native plants and habitat creation and/or protection.
Nominations for the 2019 Sutherland Shire Australia Day Awards officially open on Wednesday 1 August, 2018. Each year Sutherland Shire Council holds the awards to recognise members of our community for the positive difference they make to the lives of others.

An innovative new Shire amenities building that opened today in Bundeena, is up for an Institute of Public Works Engineers Association (IPWEA) award for -Design and Construction of a Local Government Project up $500,000.
Sutherland Shire Councillors tonight voted to keep Engadine Leisure Centre pools open year-round.

The Olympic Pool at Engadine Leisure Centre will re-open Saturday 14 July from 6am and programs will return as normal from Monday 16 July, following the temporary closure to carry out emergency repair works on a vital pipe that services the pool.

We also recognise the need to balance service provision that best meets the needs of our whole community with long term financial sustainability. Unprecedented rises in energy costs have resulted in challenges on the operating budget of Sutherland Shire Leisure Centres, particularly increasing costs of heating and maintaining outdoor pools in the low season.
