Did you know Sutherland Shire has been a Refugee Welcome Zone since 2004? Every year millions of people flee their countries in search of safety and we welcome those that choose Sutherland Shire as their new home. Council is committed to upholding the human rights of refugees, showing compassion and working to enhance cultural and religious diversity in our community.
To mark Refugee Week and raise awareness about issues affecting refugees, we’ve partnered with Gymea Community Aid and Information Service, together with Sutherland Shire Multicultural Network, to host two online screenings today of the documentary For Sama. This film tells the story of a young mother who falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while conflict rises around her in Syria. It has won the Prix L’OEil d’Or for Best Documentary at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. It also won the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary at the SXSW Film Festival, and the Special Jury Prize for International Feature Documentary at the Hot Docs Festival. Council is committed to creating a community where everyone feels they belong and I’m sure this film will inspire you all to do the same. Book online for the free from-home tickets for the 2.30pm or 6.30pm screening by visiting sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au/refugeeweek
