To launch the “Satire in the War Years” exhibition at Sutherland Library, Senior Curator for the State Library of NSW Elise Edmonds will present on Hal Eyre’s political cartoons and discuss other Australian artists whose work is held in the State Library of NSW.
A picture paints a thousand words. Political cartoonists can cut to the core of an issue with a few well place lines and cutting caricatures of politicians, monarchs and other tall poppies. Hal Eyre was one of these, depicting European leaders, the average Aussie digger and enemy forces in simple yet powerful perspectives.
Many of those who served in World War I kept diaries and letters, but others preferred to describe their experiences in pencil, watercolour and oils.
Powerful, poignant images of war are contrasted against images illustrating the joy of escaping battle for a couple of hours to enjoy peaceful countryside and civilian life. These works demonstrate the continuation of life; the humanity and creativity of those who were surviving amidst the terror and unpredictability of trench warfare.
