Welcome to the 2021 Sutherland Shire Literary Competition
Entries Open: 9.00 am (AEDST) on Monday, 22 February 2021.
Entries Close: 11.59 pm (AEST) on Monday, 19 April 2021.
The competition is open to individuals 18 years and over who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia and living in Australia on the day of entry.
The 2018 and 2020 competitions attracted almost a thousand entries from residents in every State and Territory of Australia. Check out the winning entries and judges’ comments for these previous competitions.
Eligible entrants are invited to submit their individual, original works in the following categories:
- Rhyming verse (max 80 lines)
- Free verse (max 80 lines)
- Short story (max 2,000 words)
Major prizes offered in each category are:
- 1st Prize: $1,000
- 2nd Prize: $500
At the judges’ discretion, two separate Shire Resident’s Prizes of $500 and $250 may be also awarded for the best entries in each category from a Shire resident not winning a major prize in that category. To be eligible for the Shire Resident’s Prize, an entrant must also be living in the Sutherland Shire on the day of entry (proof of residency may be required).
Prize winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony on Friday, 23 July 2021.
How to Enter
Entry Fee: $15.00 per poem/story
Multiple entries from individuals are welcome but you must complete an entry form and pay the entry fee for each poem or short story you wish to submit. Entries will only be accepted online through the entry form on this website. All entry fees are non-refundable.
All entries must be the original work of the author. Entries must be submitted as Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) files, typed in black without photographs, drawings, coloured background, illustrations or embellishments of any kind.
To ensure impartial judging, the entrant’s name should not appear anywhere on the poem or short story being submitted, or in the name of the uploaded file itself.
