Gurrumul

24 Sep 2018 - 30 Sep 2018

A film about the life of musician Gurrumul Yunupingu, selected by our Director Belinda.

The widely celebrated aboriginal Australian musician was known for his soulful tenor vocals that blended his traditional cultural heritage and Yolngu language with Western folk, gospel and classical elements. Approaching its reclusive subject with unerring respect, the elegantly composed documentary mirrors the gentle power and ethereal hush of Gurrumul's singing. Filmed in concerts, backstage and on Elcho Island off the coast of Arnhem Land with additional commentary by Gurrumul's relatives and colleagues it is an evocative and insightful film.

Picked by Hazelhurst Director Belinda Hanrahan: “I love this film for the hauntingly beautiful voice of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunipingu and his amazing story. The perfect antidote to isolation!
