Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award 2017

Held every two years since 2001, the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award is a significant national exhibition that aims to elevate the status of works on paper while supporting and promoting artists working with this medium.

In 2017 entries were received by over 850 artists from across the country, the largest number of artists to have entered the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award which has prize money totalling $26,000.

The exhibiting 76 finalists were selected by Carrie Kibbler, Hazelhurst Curator; Grahame Kime, Hazelhurst Art Centre Coordinator; Louisa Chircop, winner of the Local Artist Award 2015, and Rochelle Haley, artist and lecturer UNSW Art & Design.

Exhibited throughout Hazelhurst, in the Regional Gallery, the foyer and the Broadhurst Gallery, the works in the 2017 Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award demonstrated the materiality of paper, its versatility, and the possibilities of paper as a medium. Works included painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, sculpture, installation and video.

All 76 finalists’ works can be viewed in the digital exhibition catalogue.   


The judge for the 2017 Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award was Denise Mimmocchi, Senior Curator of Australian Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales. Brian Robinson was awarded the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award 2017 of $15,000 sponsored by Tradies, for his work entitled Land Sea Sky - Charting our place in the universe (pictured below).

The judge commented: “Technically this work is incredibly sophisticated, it has a wonderful sense of the movements of the universe where land, sea and stars meet and gods mingle with figures of popular culture.”

The Young & Early Career Artist Award of $5,000 was awarded to Harriet Body for Wet Season, Dry Season 2017 (pictured below) and the Friends of Hazelhurst Local Artist Prize of $5,000 was awarded to Michelle Cawthorn for Daughter 2017 (pictured below).

In addition to the three main awards, Hazelhurst’s installation crew selected an artist to receive a four week residency at Hazelhurst and this was awarded to Andy Quilty for Self Portrait Studies #10.
